looked at D.J. His eyes narrowed when he spied her tight mouth. "Do you want anything for the pain yet?"
She bit her lip and shook her head. She'd wait until they got to the cabin before she took anything else. There was no telling what could happen before they got there, and she might need a clearer head than pain killers would allow to deal with any trouble.
"Where's my gun?"
"Here." McCall pulled the .9 mm from his jacket. He laid the weapon on the stretcher, within reach of her fingers.
She smiled her thanks. He looked away again, returning his attention to Danny, who still hesitated at the rear of the van.
"You're sure you're all right?"
"Fine, Danny boy. Now get us out of here."
Danny must have heard the apprehension in D.J.'s voice, for he listened to her order without question. The doors slammed, and seconds later the van rolled into motion.
D.J. sighed, though the sound came out more of a moan, and closed her eyes.
"Are you in pain?"
The single light in the back of the van came from the front window, several feet away. Semidarkness shrouded them both, but she could see him if she opened her eyes. She didn't want to. Without the benefit of sight, she heard nuances in McCall's voice that she wouldn't notice otherwise. Right now, despite the concern in the question, he sounded quite angry with her.
